Rear Additions, Second-Story Additions, and Pop-Ups

Finnegan Construction Group LLC is a licensed general contractor building home additions in Washington DC and Maryland. We add space to DC rowhouses and Maryland single-family homes, from rear additions to second-story additions and pop-ups.

Types of Home Additions

Rear additions. Extend the back of the house for a bigger kitchen, family room, or extra bedroom.

Second-story additions. Build up instead of out when the lot is too small to expand.

Rowhouse pop-ups and top-floor master suites. Add a floor to a DC rowhouse for a master suite, more bedrooms, or a separate unit.

Additions with a basement. Combine an addition with underpinning or a dig out to add space above and below.

Why Build an Addition?

More space without moving. Stay in the neighborhood you already live in.

A master suite. A new top floor with a bedroom, bathroom, and closet of your own.

Rental income. An addition can create a separate unit in some DC properties.

Resale value. Added square footage adds value in DC and Maryland.

Our Home Addition Process

1. Site visit and estimate. We look at the house, talk through what you want to add, and give you an estimate.

2. Design and engineering. We work with an architect and structural engineer on the drawings.

3. Zoning and historic review. We check what zoning allows on your lot. If the house is in a historic district, the design goes through historic preservation review.

4. Permits. We handle permitting with the DC Department of Buildings or the Maryland county permit office.

5. Construction. Foundations, framing, roofing, and exterior, then mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, with inspections along the way.

6. Finishing. Insulation, drywall, flooring, and finishes that match the rest of the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a home addition take?

It depends on the complexity of the project. Once we have a plan, we can give you a realistic timeline.

Can I build a pop-up on my DC rowhouse?

It depends on your zoning and whether the house is in a historic district. We check this before design starts so you know what is possible.

Can I live in the house during an addition?

Sometimes. Living in the house can slow construction down, but we can work however you prefer.
